Living in a time of excessive divisiveness in America’s body politic, and violent extremism
around the world,
Recognizing that communities and people of faith, and religious and spiritual leaders have a
special responsibility to respond to this challenge with insight and courage,
Compelled by the requirement each of our traditions place on us to love our neighbor and
to live out the Golden Rule (affirmed by all major religions) to do to others as we would have
them do to us
Affirming that loving our neighbor is not just a matter of sentimental attitude but of solidarity,
We, religious leaders, and people of faith and of goodwill pledge to:
• Seek the rich resources available in our traditions, histories, and religious and cultural
practices that prompt us to make this commitment to Embodied Solidarity
• Teach, preach, discuss and promote in our congregations and communities, values and
best practices that lead to loving and caring for our neighbors
• Offer welcome to strangers, and hospitality to neighbors, engaging in dialogue and
service
• Learn, with appreciation, the richness of the cultural and religious traditions of our
neighbors
• Tell, with truthfulness and passion, the stories of solidarity through print and broadcast
media, social media and in our own publications
• Stand in solidarity with our neighbors in their need for justice and peace.
