In 2008, the Council invited cities around the world to join in the movement building up to the Parliament of the World's Religions to be held in Melbourne, Australia from December 3 - 9, 2009.
Over 90 Pre-Parliament events in 60 countries were held in cities, towns and villages across Australia and around the world in the months leading up to the Melbourne gathering. Through their partnership with the Council, these events offered:
- a "taste" of the Parliament experience
- opportunities to get involved in the 2009 Parliament
- a forum to highlight the work of your local interreligious initiatives
The following resources were provided to communities to help in planning Pre-Parliament Events: (While they are no longer active forms, they can serve as a general guide for hosting interfaith events in a community.)
- Pre-Parliament Exploration Guide and Planning Kit (within Australia)
- Pre-Parliament Exploration Guide and Planning Kit (outside Australia)
- Pre-Parliament Exploration Guide and Planning Kit (Spanish)
