Who am I? Conversation Series

Free public conversation series leading up to the Parliament of the World’s Religions.

This series of ten monthly conversations will create public dialogue between people of different backgrounds and religious traditions.

Moderated by Penny Mulvey of Positive Media, they explore questions relevant to the upcoming Melbourne Parliament of the World’s Religions and to our multifaith society.

Who am I? The visions of Jung, Darwin, Mondrian and Ramana Maharshi

This final event, introduced by Isobel Crombie, Senior Curator, Photography, National Gallery of Victoria, explores the responses of a groundbreaking psychologist (Jung), a scientist who probed the origins of human life (Darwin) an artist whose creativity tapped into metaphysical issues (Mondrian) and a great yogi with a profound spiritual philosophy (Ramana Maharshi).

   
Patrick Mahaffey is an academic specialising in religious studies. He has published essays on religious
pluralism, postmodernism, religion in America, and yoga. He has chaired the Pacifica Graduate Institute (Santa Monica) Mythological Studies Program since 1995.
Doug McCann, completed his PhD in the Department of the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Melbourne in 1997 where he is now a Fellow. Doug's interests include history and philosophy of science generally and in particular the history of geology, Darwinism and the histories of life sciences. He is a member of the Council of the Royal Society of Victoria and is currently working on its archives and history.
Jason Smith has been Director of Heide Museum of Modern Art since 2008. He oversees the cultural programming, business management and collection development of the Museum. Previously he was Director of Monash Gallery of Art, and between 1997 and 2007 Jason was Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Victoria where he worked closely with many leading Australian and international contemporary artists. Mahant Swami Shankarananda is a leading meditation teacher and Director of the Shiva School of Meditation in Mt Eliza. He has taught and written about meditation, self inquiry and the philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism for over forty years. He is author of the best-selling book Happy for No Good Reason, and Consciousness is Everything.
