Daniel Gómez-Ibáñez and others founded the Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1988. He served as trustee (1988–2002), chair (1989–1991), and Executive Director (1991–1993). He worked with Dr. Hans Küng to produce Toward a Global Ethic; an Initial Declaration.

In 1994 Dr. Gómez-Ibáñez founded the Peace Council with about twenty of the world’s most respected religious and spiritual leaders. He was Executive Director until retiring in 2007. The Peace Council was a response to the many appeals at the 1993 Parliament for effective interfaith collaboration on the critical issues of the world. It did practical work for peace in conflict zones around the world.

Previously he was Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Wisconsin (1971-77). He is the author of several papers and a book, The Western Pyrenees (Oxford, 1975). From 1977 to 1991 he was an executive at Wisconsin Power & Light.

Dr. Gómez-Ibáñez has served on non-profit boards, including the Millennium Institute (Washington), the Vivekananda Vedanta Society (Chicago), the Ramakrishna Mission (Belur, India), the steering committee of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, and the Cambridge (Wisconsin) school board.

He is married to Virginia Swisher and has two daughters and two granddaughters by a previous marriage.
