Earth Charter

Earth Charter International’s (ECI) mission is to contribute to the transition to sustainable ways of living on the planet by offering an ethical foundation for a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world. The focus of our work lies in engaging, empowering, and educating young leaders and educators from around the world to contribute to the transition towards sustainability. This is done through online and face-to-face professional development education programs, as well as resources that are generated such as a series of dialogues and interviews in the form of a Podcast titled: “Turning Conscience into Action for a thriving Earth.” All of our educational programs and research activities focus on the intersection of sustainability, ethics and education. ECI’s next conference will take place in April 2024 in Florida under the theme: “Reimagining Education for Ecological Civilizations”.

The Earth Charter (EC) is a document with sixteen principles powering a global movement. The EC enunciates the values and principles by which sustainable development can be achieved. When you apply it to your business, school or community, you begin turning conscience into action to make all life on Earth thrive.

The EC offers an ethical foundation for actions to build a more just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the 21st century. It articulates a mindset of global interdependence and shared responsibility and offers a vision of hope and a call to action.

The EC is a product of a decade-long, worldwide, cross-cultural dialogue on common goals and shared values. It is used as an educational instrument, as a reference and tool in the development of policies, planning; and decisions and in many other ways. The Earth Charter document starts with the Preamble, followed by the four pillars: Respect and Care for the Community of Life, Ecological Integrity, Social and Economic Justice, and Democracy, Nonviolence, and Peace. It concludes with The Way Forward.
