[EVENT] Embodied Solidarity with Dr. Larycia Hawkins: A Faith-based Alternative to Divisive Politics

April 12, 2016

The Parliament of the World’s Religions and SCUPE invite you to an April 26 program in Chicago featuring Dr. Larycia Hawkins with leaders from the Parliament of the World’s Religions and:

SCUPE
World Council of Churches
Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago

In a time of unprecedented political divisiveness in America  and rampant violent extremism around the world, we need leaders with the wisdom  and courage to bring about a more just and compassionate human community. Religious leaders have a special responsibility to answer this challenge, including  collaboration with political and media leaders.*
Dr. Larycia Hawkins recently demonstrated how to do this. Acting on her conviction of “Embodied Solidarity,” the tenured political science professor at Wheaton College – a premier Christian Evangelical institution — wore a head scarf (hijab) in solidarity with her Muslim sisters who were experiencing Islamophobia. Her courageous stand led to public controversy and, eventually, the loss of her job.
Embodied Solidarity
What is it?  Where is it grounded in our religious and civic traditions? How does it address our contemporary situation? How can people of faith live it out?
These and other questions will be explored at this public meeting featuring a presentation by Dr. Hawkins with responses by key leaders from a variety of the world’s religious organizations (listed above) as well as civic and political leaders.  The program will also include audience participation and an opportunity to sign a Solidarity Pledge.
