Hyde Park: Home of the Chicago School of Religion and Science

Session Description:

The 1960s was an era of foundational theological change and nowhere was this more apparent than on the South Side of Chicago near the campus of the University of Chicago. Hyde Park became home to some of the most influential protestant theologians and scholars of the 20th century, who gave us new ways for seeing the future driven by a ‘yoking’ of religion and science dialogue. This session explores the history of Hyde Park’s famous thinkers including Joseph Sittler, Langdon Gilkey, Ralph Wendell Burhoe and Philip Hefner. The neighborhood has been home to global conversations centered on theology and science hosted by the Center for Advanced Study in Religion and Science, the Zygon Center for Religion and Science and notably in the pages of the Zygon Journal of Religion & Science, which began publishing in 1966.
