Orthodox Christian – Jewish Relations: A Dialogue

Session Description:

For a variety of historical, geographic, theological, and demographic reasons, the content and structure of contemporary Jewish-Christian dialogue has developed primarily within a Catholic and (liberal) Protestant—and decidedly Western—milieu. While sharing much in common with that dialogue, the Jewish-Orthodox Christian relationship has its own dynamics. Identifying and understanding the unique characteristics of Jewish-Orthodox dialogue is key to productive conversations, whether they are specifically between Jews and Orthodox Christians, or when Orthodox Christians are part of a broader Jewish-Christian conversation. There is a growing body of literature about the relationship between Jews and Orthodox Christians that coincides with renewed energy on the international level as represented by a commitment between the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations and the Ecumenical Patriarchate to collaborate on the promoting better understanding between the two communities through the development of educational materials and other concrete actions. Our bilateral dialogue has been going on for 40+ years and the presenters have been leading and representative participants in this relationship. Each panelist reflects on their own experience, with a focus on what distinguishes Jewish-Orthodox Christian relations from Jewish-Christian relations writ large. What are the challenges, obstacles, and opportunities?
