Science in Seminaries: Equipping Future Religious Leaders to Engage With Science in a Changing World

Session Description:

As scientific and technological advances continue to impact our daily lives, faith leaders will be called upon to play a vital role in helping their parishioners interpret and navigate critical issues at the intersection of science and society. However, most faith leaders do not have a background in the sciences. The Science for Seminaries project was launched in 2014 by the Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DoSER) program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to support theological institutions to incorporate science into their core coursework in order to prepare future leaders to meaningfully engage with science in their congregations, and to participate in broader societal discourse. A comprehensive evaluation of the project has demonstrated its success and sustainability. This model has been adopted by organizations in other countries. Presenters discuss the results to date and the possibilities for future expansion and adaptation to new contexts.
