Training for Non-Christian Religious Leaders at Historically Christian Graduate Schools

Session Description:

Scholars and students from a range of religious traditions engaged in the training of non-Christian religious professionals at historically Christian graduate schools discuss the opportunities and challenges of this work. Several member institutions of the historically Christian Association of Theological Schools (ATS) have been experimenting with models of professional training for students in multiple religious traditions for well-more than a decade. Muslim student enrollment at ATS member schools has grown from 38 in 2000 to 203 in 2019, and Buddhist enrollment has grown from 36 in 2009 (the first year such data is available) to 115 in 2019. Presenters discuss the growing edges of shifting religious demographics at ATS member institutions and share their experiences doing interreligious formation while working with and in predominantly Christian institutions of theological education.
