Taking On Our Own: The Interfaith Intercaste Coalition for Inclusive California Textbooks

Room 605
When California wanted to revise its textbook curriculum, South Asian scholars came up with a balanced and inclusive set of improvements — but religiously oriented lobby groups attacked the academics, launching a campaign to frame all South Asian history through an Indian Hindu upper-caste nationalist narrative that erased the stories of Sikhs, Dalits, Buddhists, Muslims, women, and other South Asian nations. Our panel will discuss the strategies used by South Asian Histories For All (SAHFA) to create a multi-faith and inter-caste coalition spanning eight religions and 25 organizations that centered the most-impacted communities, stood up against misleading media and hashtag campaigns, and won major victories in representation of Dalits, Muslims, Sikhs, and other communities.
