Prejudice and Hate Crimes Through the Ages: The Antisemitism Example

Session Description:

White supremacy is the common enemy of BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) as well as Muslims, Jews, and others. 2000 years of Christian antisemitism, then the Holocaust, and many say “never again,” but we know it is a naïve promise. Statistics show that hatred and prejudice are flourishing. Some of the so-called “new antisemitism” tries to pass as legitimate criticism of Israel. We want all countries to respect human rights and international law. Apologists say for example, “Yes but look at Canada’s history with Indigenous…”, we say “Yes, and…”, all abuses are wrong. Because Jews are perceived as successful, integrated, and can “pass as white”, the threat to us is underestimated and we are often completely left out of discussions of prejudice and hate crimes. We must put aside identity politics and work together against those who wish us ill, learn their history, methods, and motivations to find solutions, rather than to compete as victims.
