American Culture and Jewish-Christian Relations

Session Description:

On the one hand, the destruction of European Jewry compelled a monumental Christian turn from classical anti-Judaism to the development of new theologies and a new relationship with Judaism and the Jewish people. At the same time, the United States presented a unique theater for the development of these relationships. First of all, the adversos Iudaeos tradition flourished in Europe, not in the United States. Secondly, the unique openness of American culture created a remarkably important opportunity for the development of Christian-Jewish relationships. This section will explore the features of American society and American culture that made significant contributions to the development of Christian Jewish relations.
